Fathers and their role in STEM education
What is the role of fathers in STEM education? And what influence do fathers have on their daughters in connection with STEM education?
Kerstin Helmerdig, member of the matrix management board, investigated this question. She talks to three MINT-enthusiastic girls and their teacher about the role of fathers and their influence on their daughters' interest in MINT and their choice of MINT subjects. Many thanks to Hanna Grimm, Juli Marie Kleigrewe and Madleen Ediger, sixth grade students at the Von Zumbusch Comprehensive School in Herzebrock-Clarholz, and Ms. Anne Fallner-Ahrens for the interview.
Girls should be addressed by their fathers in the same way as sons. This also influences the development of the girls and their choice of subjects reports Mrs. Anne Fallner-Ahrens. “Fathers are very important!” she says.
In the conversation, she also thinks about how fathers can be well involved in MINT education so that they can see how their daughters are successful in the MINT field: For example, fathers are visited at work or fathers work at school with, show, explain and have fun together with their daughters and sons.
